CBS fired veteran 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley days after he publicly accused new network leadership of “murdering” the iconic newsmagazine — and the drama reveals a media giant in the middle of a messy, high-stakes ownership overhaul.
Story Snapshot
- Scott Pelley was terminated by CBS News on June 2, 2026, days after blasting new leadership at an internal staff meeting.
- Pelley accused CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss of “murdering” 60 Minutes and questioned the credentials of newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton.
- The firing came amid a broader shake-up at the network following David Ellison’s takeover of Paramount/CBS, which also included the removal of senior correspondents Tanya Simon, Cecilia Vega, and Sharon Alfonsi.
- Weiss defended the firing, saying Pelley broke the newsroom’s “trust” with his public blow-up.
Veteran Correspondent Explodes at New CBS Leadership
Scott Pelley, one of the most recognizable faces in American television journalism and a longtime anchor of 60 Minutes, did not go quietly when CBS News restructured its flagship program. Audio obtained by NBC News captured Pelley in a fiery staff meeting directly confronting Bari Weiss, the newly installed editor-in-chief, and accusing her of destroying a program that has been a cornerstone of American broadcast journalism for decades. [3] He also challenged the qualifications of Nick Bilton, the newly named executive producer, in front of assembled staff.
The confrontation was unusually blunt even by the standards of a high-pressure newsroom. Pelley interrupted management’s explanation of the personnel changes and accused leadership of cruelty in how senior staff were let go. [2] Colleagues reportedly applauded his remarks during the meeting — a sign of how deep the resentment ran among veteran staff toward the new direction being imposed from above.
Mass Firings Triggered the Showdown
The immediate flashpoint was the abrupt firing of several high-profile 60 Minutes contributors. Tanya Simon, Cecilia Vega, and Sharon Alfonsi were all removed as part of the leadership overhaul that followed David Ellison’s takeover of Paramount and CBS News in 2025. [2] Pelley’s outburst came directly in response to those firings, which he and other staffers viewed as a sudden and disrespectful purge of experienced journalists who had built the show’s reputation.
Tensions had been building since Ellison assumed control and installed Weiss — a journalist known for her sharp critiques of mainstream media — as editor-in-chief. [3] One fired correspondent, Sharon Alfonsi, had already publicly accused Weiss of blocking an immigration segment for political reasons, a charge Weiss denied, saying the piece simply was not ready. That earlier dispute set the tone for what became an increasingly hostile internal environment.
CBS Fires Pelley; Weiss Cites Broken Trust
CBS News terminated Pelley on June 2, 2026, following the staff meeting confrontation. [1] Weiss defended the decision publicly, stating that Pelley had broken the newsroom’s “trust” and that his conduct crossed a line. Management had framed the broader restructuring as a necessary adaptation to a changing media landscape, with one internal message reportedly describing broadcast television as “an ice cube that is melting.” [3] From that perspective, CBS leadership had a clear organizational rationale for the overhaul — and a stated reason for acting on Pelley’s insubordination.

What makes this story worth watching is what it reveals about the broader battle for control of major American media institutions. CBS News, once a pillar of establishment journalism, is now being reshaped by new ownership with different editorial priorities. Whether that is a healthy correction — stripping out years of ideological drift and bloated legacy structures — or a dangerous consolidation of editorial power depends entirely on your view of what CBS News has been and what it should become. For conservatives who spent decades watching 60 Minutes produce slanted investigations and push left-leaning narratives, the shake-up is hard to mourn. The more important question is whether the new leadership will deliver actual journalistic integrity or simply replace one bias with another.

Show was too liberal for me. Maybe they are fixing that.
After its accusation of Bush as military deserter based on fake document and refusal to identify source I quit watching it. Perhaps I will start again after purge of biased staff.
